After cycle therapy is used to restore the body builder’s natural levels of testosterone. During a training cycle the steroids prevent the body from needing to produce testosterone. Once a training cycle is complete your body needs to produce its own testosterone. This will take the body a while to do on its own and will produce some unpleasant side effects including acne, impotence and depression while the body is acclimating to producing its own testosterone. Steroids are cycled to allow the body to retain all of its normal functions and to prevent damage to the liver or kidneys due to the high doses of steroids. Bringing the body’s testosterone up to a normal level rapidly reduces the muscle mass loss that occurs once a cycle is complete.

To assist the body with returning to its normal cycle as soon as possible medications can be used. One of the most common and successful is Nolvadex. Nolvadex is a drug that prevents estrogen from being released by the body. This will stimulate the body to produce more testosterone. Men and women both have testosterone, the male hormone, and estrogen, the female hormone. Men have a large amount of testosterone, but also have a small amount of estrogen. The testosterone level helps stimulate the estrogen that is produced by the male. The estrogen helps to put on weight by increasing fat and fluids. Testosterone increases the amount of protein in muscle.

When the testosterone level drops at the end of the cycle, so does the estrogen level. By blocking the estrogen level using Nolvadex, the body is fooled into making more and more testosterone to bring the estrogen level up to normal. Nolvadex speeds up the process of producing your own testosterone. Without a boost, your testosterone level can take months to come up to normal depending on how powerful a drug that was used in the cycle.

When to begin Nolvadex and how much take depends on the type of steroid used during the cycle. Short acting steroids allow therapy to begin 3 to 5 days after completion. Long acting steroids will delay after cycle therapy longer, up to 1 to 3 weeks. You should establish these levels with a professional. Nolvadex after cycle therapy lasts for 3 to 5 weeks with a gradually decreasing dose. This allows the Nolvadex to reduce its effect as the body begins to take over the job of producing estrogen. Using Nolvadex will increase the effects of your training, while protecting your body from damage by steroids during your training cycles.

What is a SERM, and why should you care? SERM is an acronym for Selective Estrogen Receptor Modulator and you should care if you don’t want to end up looking like this guy here:

SAY NO TO GYNO!

The ‘gentleman’ in this picture has what is known as Gynecomastia which is the development of breast tissue in males. Gynecomastia from estrogen is generally caused by either a hormonal imbalance where a man has too much estrogen in his system, or because a man has a particularly high number of estrogen receptors in their chest region. After Gynecomastia has begun the only way to eliminate the breast tissue is via SURGERY. But, why would a man have estrogen in their system?

There are several reasons a man could have elevated levels of estrogen in their system. One reason is because Testosterone actually converts to ESTROGEN via a natural process called aromatization. So the more testosterone you have in your system the more estrogen you will have in your system. Whether that testosterone comes from natural sources or synthetic testosterone it will turn in to estrogen if left unchecked.

How to fight back!

There are several compounds that can help you win the fight against estrogen. Two classes of chemicals that fight estrogen are Aromatase Inhibitors which actually block the conversion of Testosterone in to Estrogen and SERM’s which work by occupying receptors which prevents estrogen from attaching to them and causing you problems. One of the best SERM’s available is Nolvadex

Nolvadex, or Tamoxifen Citrate is a SERM which again means Selective Estrogen Receptor Modulator. In order to understand how Nolvadex works we should look further in to the definition of the word SERM. I find that it is easiest to understand when broken down like this:

S: Selective, meaning that Nolvadex Selectively acts like Estrogen in some tissue and not in others, meaning that it binds to estrogen receptors specifically in the breast/chest, and not in other areas.

E: Estrogen, meaning that it acts like Estrogen and it seeks (Selectively) to bind with estrogen receptors particularly in the breast/chest region.

R: Receptor, meaning that Nolvadex’s main mechanism for action is to bind to Receptors.

M: Modulator, meaning that Nolvadex modulates or regulates the receptor by occupying it so that real estrogen cannot bind to the estrogen receptor.

Now that you understand what a SERM like Nolvadex does it is easy to see its importance in preventing unwanted side-effects.  Tamoxifen Citrate is readily available as a research chemical from reputable sites such as ChemShop.org. It is easily one of the most effective methods to prevent Gynecomastia and should always be kept readily available when Gynecomastia is a concern.
